Book Review: FORGIVE MY FINS by Tera Lynn Childs

Forgive My Fins
Author: Tera Lynn Childs
Publication Date: May 19, 2011
Publisher: Katherine Tegen
BooksGenre/Category: Young Adult, Urban Fantasy

Summary on Goodreads:

Lily Sanderson has a secret, and it’s not that she has a huge crush on gorgeous swimming god Brody Bennett, who makes her heart beat flipper-fast. Unrequited love is hard enough when you’re a normal teenage girl, but when you’re half human, half mermaid like Lily, there’s no such thing as a simple crush.

Lily’s mermaid identity is a secret that can’t get out, since she’s not just any mermaid – she’s a Thalassinian princess. When Lily found out three years ago that her mother was actually a human, she finally realized why she didn’t feel quite at home in Thalassinia, and she’s been living on land and going to Seaview high school ever since, hoping to find where she truly belongs. Sure, land has its problems – like her obnoxious, biker boy neighbor Quince Fletcher – but it has that one major perk – Brody. The problem is, mermaids aren’t really the casual dating type – when they “bond,” it’s for life.

When Lily’s attempt to win Brody’s love leads to a tsunami-sized case of mistaken identity, she is in for a tidal wave of relationship drama, and she finds out, quick as a tailfin flick, that happily-ever-after never sails quite as smoothly as you planned.
My Thoughts:

This was not part of my TBR list and I just grabbed it impulsively the last time I went to the bookstore. It's the first book about mermaids that I've ever read. Forgive My Fins is something new to me, very refreshing since it covers a whole ocean of water! (pun intended).

I can't say I love this book, but I must've really liked it since it took me less than a day to finish. The story is good and it has a very nice plot. Though I must say that I didn't like Lily. She's too immature and narrow-minded, which made her a not-so-great heroine. I've met a lot of awesome characters in the previous books I've read, so maybe that's why I wasn't impressed by this Thalassinian Princess. Thank goodness there's Quince who captured my heart from the very beginning. If not for him, I must have thrown this book and picked up some other book in my growing pile of TBR!

The love story between the two main characters is really entertaining, since the romantic flavor has a bit of humor which I really enjoyed. The characters are well developed and easy to relate with, except Lily, I'm not really fond of her. Other than that, I think this book is really good. A new and refreshing read especially when you're a bit tired of vampire stories, or werewolves, or angels or faeries. Over all, I like this book, I love Quince, I love the plot which is really promising and I will definitely read the sequel. But I'm hoping to see some improvement on Lily's character.

  1. With a cover that pretty, I'm not surprised you picked this one up on impulse! While I haven't read any of Childs's novels, I do have Sweet Venom waiting for me. I'm sorry to hear this one didn't exceed your expectations though!

    Great review, April :)

  2. This sounds like a cute read, but I've been hesitant to read it because immature MC's aren't really my cup of tea. But, it sounds like Quince makes the book worthwhile ;)

    Nice honest review!

  4. It's too bad this book only received 3/5. I was really hoping it would be a 4 or a 5. I'll still probably read it, because I really want to read a mermaid story.

  5. Hi everyone! Thank you for your comments.. I really enjoyed this book, definitely a good read! The only problem i seem to have about it is the main character. A strong heroine is very important to me... Unfortunately, I was annoyed by Lily most of times when I read this book. So that's why i gave it 3 out of 5 rating. I will definitely read the next book. Besides, I love Quince!!! ;)

    Xoxo, april
